Description
view of the Sweetwater Strand in the Big Cypress National Preserve. A strand is a natural channel to drain the water from the surrounding higher flat land.
The Big Cypress National Preserve is adjacent to the Everglades National Park and is the first National Preserve in the USA. The original proposal was to include it in the Everglades National Park, but due to existing hunting rights, land ownerships, Indian territories, and oil right to one articular wealthy family, that was not possible so the concept of a National Preserve was the next best solution. The preserve is managed by the National Park Service.
Sweetwater Strand is of Loop Road half way between Miami and Fort Meyers on the Gulf of Mexico.
