Description
View of one of the oldest courtyards ("Hofje" in Dutch) in Haarlem, The Netherlands. These type of courtyards were build by wealthy individuals and companies for the old and the needy. Usually just women for some reason. The women that were lucky enough to get this opportunity were usually given a small allowance, some food, and fuel for heating. (Peat)
This particular courtyard was originally built in 1472 with 22 residences, but a fire in 1576 destroyed the courtyard and only 8 residences were rebuild in 1586. It was financed and managed by a the local brewers guild for some of their retired female employees (Brouwers is Dutch for Brewers)
These courtyards are still occupied today. (different people lol)

Having grown up in The Netherlands I was immediately pulled into het Hofje, Rudy. What a wonderful portrait to bring me 'home'. I love the light reflected in the windows and the ambience you have captured in this image. Well done. LF
